CEMI President and CEO Douglas Morrison Joins the Critical Minerals Institute Board of Directors
TORONTO, Ontario, November 3, 2026 — The Critical Minerals Institute (CMI), a global think tank and central hub for the critical minerals ecosystem, is pleased to announce that Douglas Morrison, President and CEO of the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI), has joined its Board of Directors. Morrison brings extensive experience in underground mining, international consulting, and the commercialization of mining technologies. His appointment strengthens CMI’s technical and operational expertise as it connects companies, capital markets and policymakers across the critical mineral ecosystem.
“Douglas is a visionary who understands that the future of our mining industry depends on our ability to develop and adopt competitive technologies,” said Tracy Hughes, Executive Director and Co-Founder of CMI. “His recognition that innovation must translate into greater productivity, lower costs and stronger global competitiveness is precisely the leadership our industry needs. We are delighted to welcome him to the CMI Board of Directors.”
Morrison was appointed President and CEO of CEMI in 2012, having held key roles with the organization from 2011. His career includes 15 years in the deep nickel mines of Ontario’s Sudbury Basin, where he became Superintendent of Rock Mechanics and Mine Design at Inco, now Vale. He subsequently spent 15 years with Golder Associates, advising mines internationally on strategic mine design, productivity and safety. From 2005 to 2010, he served as Golder’s Global Mining Sector Leader, based in Toronto.
Throughout his career, Morrison has maintained advisory or board roles with Canadian mining research organizations, including CAMIRO and MIRARCO. In 2014, he became Director of the Ultra-deep Mining Network, a $35 million program focused on developing solutions for bulk mining at depths below 2.5 kilometres. His work has centred on improving productivity, reducing mining costs and limiting environmental impacts through innovation.
“Building secure critical minerals supply chains requires the industry to improve how it develops and operates mines, and how it impacts the environment,” said Morrison. “Innovation must deliver measurable improvements in productivity, cost and environmental performance. I look forward to working with CMI’s directors and members to connect practical mining solutions with the industry partners and investment needed to advance them.”
“At CEMI, the focus of our MICA Network is on accelerating the adoption of commercially viable innovations and strengthening the capabilities of the mining service companies that bring new technologies into the industry. This work complements CMI’s role in connecting technical expertise, market intelligence, policy, and investment across the critical minerals sector, and I am honoured to be invited to join such an illustrious Board as that of CMI.”
