- DoD Phase 2 Award: Ucore has officially launched its USD $18.4 million Phase 2 Award from the U.S. Department of Defense. This award will fund the construction of the first commercial-scale RapidSX™ machine at the company’s planned Louisiana rare earth refining facility, which will focus on heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) essential for advanced defense and commercial technologies.
- DoD Phase 1 Achievements: Under the earlier USD $4 million Phase 1 Award, Ucore successfully demonstrated the separation of terbium and dysprosium, two of the most critical HREEs used in permanent magnets. This achievement triggered a milestone payment of USD $1,057,412 from the DoD, bringing total Phase 1 payments received to USD $3,352,884, with another USD $647,116 expected once remaining milestones are completed.
- Strategic Importance: HREEs such as terbium and dysprosium are vital for U.S. national security, as they are used in precision-guided missiles, radar systems, and F-35 jet engines. Beyond defense, these materials are also critical for electric vehicles, renewable energy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors. Ucore’s partnership with the DoD directly addresses U.S. dependence on China, which continues to dominate and restrict HREE exports.
- Project Milestones Under Phase 2: The Phase 2 Award has initiated key milestones, including the detailed design and engineering of commercial-scale RapidSX™ columns at Ucore’s Kingston, Ontario demonstration facility, as well as fieldwork for the Louisiana Strategic Metals Complex (SMC). The project will culminate with the construction, commissioning, and early production readiness of separated rare earth products at the Louisiana SMC.
- U.S. DoD Policy and Support: Ucore also emphasized its support for recent Department of Defense initiatives designed to strengthen the domestic rare earth supply chain. These include pricing floors, offtake commitments, and direct project funding, all of which are intended to create industry stability and investor confidence while ensuring North America builds a rare earth supply chain independent of Chinese control.
