James Lautens is a Junior Research Fellow for the NATO and Canada Program at the NATO Association of Canada. He was formerly an Engagement Coordinator at the NATO Association of Canada. He graduated with High Distinction from the University of Toronto with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in History and Classical Civilization. He is currently taking a gap year before starting his Master of Public Policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy in Fall 2025. James is passionate about government and a possible career in the civil service. His areas of academic interest are politics and religion in Early Modern Europe as well as the history of military development in Ancient Greece. He is particularly interested in the coordination of provincial and municipal governments in the implementation of policy. In his spare time James writes book reviews for H-Net War and does occasional contract work for the Critical Minerals Institute, a think tank focused on the mineral supply chain and new green technologies.
