CMI Co-Chair Jack Lifton to Deliver Keynote Address Titled “Overcoming Our Addiction to China”
Toronto, Ontario – July 24, 2024 – The Critical Minerals Institute (CMI) is pleased to announce its upcoming third summit, CMI Summit III, set to take place on August 21-22, 2024, at the prestigious National Club in Toronto. Under the theme “The Politics of the Critical Minerals Market”, this landmark two-day event will bring together industry frontrunners, investors, government representatives, and experts to discuss the pivotal role of critical minerals in the global economy.
Jack Lifton, Co-Chair of the Critical Minerals Institute (CMI) and a renowned expert in critical minerals, will deliver a keynote address titled “Overcoming Our Addiction to China.” Lifton will discuss the impact of politics, capital, and technology on the future movement of critical minerals. He will emphasize the significant role of hybrid cars in the future market, noting that they optimize the efficiency of both electric and fossil fuels. Additionally, Lifton will highlight the challenges and impracticalities of recycling permanent magnets used in rare earth elements, describing the process as prohibitively expensive and technically challenging. Addressing the broader issue of dependency on China for critical materials, Lifton remarked, “We’ve been hypnotized by low-priced everyday goods. Maybe we’re paying less, but we’re giving up more—our independence.” He will underscore the need for Western nations to build their own capacity for producing rare permanent magnet motors to reduce reliance on Chinese imports, stressing the urgency of this shift to maintain economic and technological independence.
CMI Summit III will focus on the advancement of global supply chains related to key critical minerals and the involvement of governments in capital markets as investors in the critical minerals supply chain. Discussions will revolve around the strategic investments and partnerships needed to find, secure, and develop these minerals, essential for technological advancement and economic growth. The summit will highlight the 18 critical minerals identified by CMI as essential for sustaining Western economic growth, with special emphasis on five key minerals: Copper, Lithium, PGMs, REEs, and Uranium, due to their extensive applications in technology, energy, and industrial sectors. Since 2022, CMI has been monitoring critical minerals in 8 countries, tracking 10 lists and over 51 minerals and/or materials from the USA DOE Critical Minerals List, USA USGS Critical Minerals List, Canadian Critical Minerals List, Australia’s Critical Minerals List, Australia’s Strategic Materials List, UK Critical Minerals List, European Critical Minerals List, Japan Critical Minerals List, South Korea Critical Minerals List, and Indian Critical Minerals List.
